PhD candidate Behavioural Ecology Group

Clara Vinyeta Cortada

I am a biologist interested in the animal behaviour and ecology. During my BSc Biology in Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, I specialized in ecology and zoology. I completed my MSc Biology at Wageningen University. My MSc Thesis with the Behavioural Ecology Group (BHE) explored how the cognitive abilities of great tits (Parus major) vary according to the quality of their habitat. I realized great tits were a fascinating model for studying wild songbird behaviour. Later, I studied lizard (Podarcis erhardii) social behaviour in Greek islands, with the University of Antwerp, as part of my MSc Internship.

I am currently doing a PhD with the BHE group, supervised by Lysanne Snijders, Chris Tyson, Marc Naguib and Kees van Oers. The focus of my PhD project is to explore the social strategies of great tits. We study wild great tits from the Westerheide forest in the Netherlands. By radio-tracking these birds, using RFID feeders and audio/video recordings, we want to understand how social interactions can help great tits forage. We also aim to gain a better understanding of which factors influence their use of social information in the wild. Understanding this will give us invaluable insight into the behaviour of this wild bird. Please contact me for any discussions or questions!
