Andries Janse van Vuuren

I am mainly interested in bird diversity and behaviour, specifically bird sociality and cooperative breeding.

I grew up in South Africa, where I enrolled in Zoology at the University of Pretoria. Here I worked on southern ground-hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) thermoregulation after which I researched reproductive suppression in African mole-rats (Cryptomys hottentotus). My interest in social behaviour grew while working on these cooperative breeding species, which led to my current research interests.

Project overview

Why some species live in groups to raise the young of others is still unclear. Determining the costs and benefits of breeding cooperatively have puzzled researchers for many years and my current research aims to improve our understanding of this phenomenon. For my project, I am looking at the effects of predation on the evolution of cooperative breeding in birds by investigating multiple species in Eswatini.
